| Everyone connected with the AHG Sprintcar Series has been devastated by the sudden passing of WA speedway great Michael Figliomeni. Although Michael was not intending to race his Sprintcar this season he was still highly regarded by all in that category. The multiple Australian and WA Speedcar titleholder proved that he was also a very capable Sprintcar competitor over the past few years. Although Figliomeni raced a Sprintcar on occasions at the Claremont Speedway, it was at the Perth Motorplex that he really excelled. Figs won 4 Sprintcar features during the inaugural 2000-01 Kwinana season – 2 the following summer – 1 in 2002-03 – 3 in 2003-04 – and 1 in 2004-05. He also took out the prestigious Krikke Boys Shootout at Bunbury on 2 occasions and twice was placed second. During the summer of 2003-04 Figs topped the pointscore in the then named Car Craft Sprintcar Series. During the six previous seasons of the AHG Sprintcar Series (formerly the Car Craft Series) Figliomeni was third highest in the all-time list of feature race winners. He was an amazing driver and an amazing man. Much has been said of his quiet unassuming nature and it is all 100% true. Michael Figliomeni was truly a “Magic Man” in every sense of the word. His untimely passing at the age of 43 is a real tragedy for WA Speedway – and the thousands of people who knew him. He will always be remembered as a “Legend” of our sport. RIP Michael Figliomeni |
