Madsen Strikes Gold In Kalgoorlie

The form of Kendrick Racing is coming together at the business end of the season in Western Australia.

After competing on the east coast since Boxing Day the team returned to Western Australia late last week to race at Bunbury and they were immediately rewarded.

Kerry Madsen won that feature race from Mark Wells and David Priolo.

Then they fronted for the Performance Wholesale World Series Sprintcars round in Kalgoorlie on Wednesday night and won that deal too – from a hard-finishing Ryan Farrell and David Murcott.

It gives the team confidence going into the WSS grand final at the Perth Motorplex this Friday and Saturday night.

“We have ironed out all our problems while we were away and pretty much got everything sorted in qualifying and in the heats,” team owner Geoff Kendrick said.

“And of course in Kalgoorlie last night it was a race of attrition…we were lucky enough to stay out of trouble, grabbed a pair of seconds in the heats and then set quick time in the Vortex Top 8 Shootout which put us off pole. “And that helps.”

Kendrick said the slick and dusty Goldfields track meant they had to look after the tyres on both the 92 (Madsen) and 11 cars (driven by son Jason). “At the end of the race we still had something left on the tyres.”

Unfortunately the second team car was damaged after young Kendrick got tagged at the start of the feature race and hit the wall but he has showed plenty of improvement in the last few months and is also ready for a good showing in Perth.

Kendrick said the team had been given a confidence boost after the last two wins but said they weren’t overly confident.

“Obviously the Motorplex is our home track and we have done quite a few laps there so we have a bit of local knowledge which should help us,” Kendrick said.

“Hopefully we can put another win on the board for our sponsors and do them proud.”

While the results have finally come their way Madsen said they hadn’t done anything too different.

“We have just been putting ourselves in a position to win, did everything right in the heats and qualifying and then took advantage of a good start,” Madsen said immediately after touching down at Perth Airport after the flight from Kalgoorlie.

“Everyone on the team is all getting on the same page now.

“At the end of the day we have had a bit of bad luck and I hate using that word bad luck, but now things are working well and we don’t need to try anything stupid.”
