Madsen Wins King Of Wings Prelminary Final In Perth
Posted Saturday, 20 February 2010 by Darren ODea
Kerry Madsen won the 25-lap Nanovich Sprintcar King of Wings preliminary feature race at the Perth Motorplex on Friday night from Max Dumesny and Brooke Tatnell.
Madsen started from position five in the feature race and showed his hand with 15 to go when he got underneath Dumesny for the lead and ultimately the win.
“We got into traffic and that gave me the run we needed,” Madsen said.
“I really enjoyed that track.
“We haven’t had much luck here…let’s see if we can keep the Madsen name up here,” the Kendrick Racing driver said in reference to his brother Ian winning the World Series Sprintcars final at the same venue a fortnight earlier.
Dumesny said it was great to get on the podium here in Western Australia.
“We have struggled lately,” Dumesny said.
“We have all been a bit down in the mouth lately…but we have seen a bit of light with this new car.”
While Tatnell was happy with third (after starting on pole) he lamented missed opportunities.
“We made a bit of a meal on the start,” Tatnell said.
“We had to get up on the cushion quickly on Max.
“We drove our butt off…the track was awfully fast tonight…it was a lot more exciting when we got into lapped traffic.”
Dumesny led away early but the field regrouped after four laps when Jason Kendrick spun on the back straight and had to be forklifted off after the front-end collapsed.
On the restart it was Dumesny from Madsen, Tatnell, American Johnson and Ryan Farrell.
The leaders were in lapped traffic with 17 laps to go and a couple of laps later Madsen pounced on the inside at the end of the main straight.
Two laps later the caution lights were on when Ken Sartori stopped with a flat right rear tyre.
While Madsen’s motor was smoking in the latter stages he didn’t ease off the throttle and put in some sensational slide jobs on the slower cars.
Johnson finished fourth from Farrell, Steven Lines, Jamie Maiolo, David Ellement, American star Sammy Swindell, Shaun Bradford, Ben Ellement, Carl Dowling, Kris Coyle, Robert Farr, Mark Wells, Bryan Mann, Allan Nash, Ricky Maiolo and Todd Waddell.
Wells won the drag race to the first corner over Ricky Maiolo to set up a big win in the B Main.
The field regrouped with four laps remaining after Danny Reidy ran into the turn one-two fence.
“We had something break in the front end,” Reidy said.
“I am glad I was in the B and not the A and taking out some of those guys.”
Following Wells and Maiolo over the line was Mann, Lawson and Clayden.
Madsen, who started on the outside front row, won the first heat from Ben Ellement and Carl Dowling.
The start of the second heat was marred by a flip to Troy Lawson who went over after minor contact on the main straight.
Wells jumped two starts in a row and was sent to the rear of the field.
Tatnell then got a warning in the next attempt and on the fourth start things got underway, with Tatnell winning from Farrell and Swindell.
“If this thing gets blown off all the way up to the fence…it’s going to be fun,” Tatnell said after the win.
At the start of the third heat Sartori got warned for an early jump and then on the next attempt Priolo pulled infield.
David Ellement went on to win the race from Sartori and Jamie Maiolo.
“This format is a tough format and we can’t make any mistakes,” Ellement said.
Tatnell was frowned upon by officials after they believed he made an aggressive move which put Swindell over on the exit of turn four early on in the A Dash.
Swindell walked over and remonstrated with Tatnell who was still in the car and ready for the restart.
Tatnell was in a mean mood as he went on to win the A Dash from Jamie Maiolo and Madsen.
When asked to comment on the incident after the win Tatnell was pretty matter-of-fact about the incident.
“Sammy is a hard racer, I am a hard racer,” Tatnell said.
He said neither driver was going to give up ground.
“On the second lap I got in there and he left the door open…I don’t deliberately go and crash guys.”
Lines won the Midpack Madness race from Ian Madsen and Bradford.
