| One thing Jason Johnson has learned during his time with Alan Haynes and the HM Racing team is to enjoy his racing, and that was clearly evident last weekend at the running of the Nanovich King of the Wings at the Perth Motorplex. Johnson and the entire team looked very casual as they went about their preparation of the Haynes Labour Hire/Deans Auto Glass #47, but with the knowledge that they had a job to do. It was all about preparation prior to arriving at the track and the Brandon Telfer led crew had once again prepared one damn good hot rod for Johnson. During the weekend Johnson showed just how good he is in a fire breathing 800+ horsepower Sprintcar, and was one of the front runners over the two nights of this big event. He came away with a top ten in time trials, a couple of good heats including one win, two top three places in his dashes plus a fourth and a third in the two A-Mains. Not a bad run by anybody’s standards and after collecting the $5,000 payday for third on the second night, Johnson wasn’t complaining that’s for sure. “I had fun out there tonight. From the drivers seat I had a birds eye view of that big scoreboard up in turn two and I looked up with about ten laps to go and Brooke was held up in traffic so I tried to do everything I could to catch him. I got myself loose in one & two and kind of gave it away and gave (Kerry) Madsen enough time to catch me I guess. He got me on that last lap and I gave that away too.” Madsen’s move was a deep run in to turn three that had many of the fans on their feet as he tried one last time to gain one last spot. JJ looked at it this way “It was definitely an ‘option’ move, I mean it was one of those deals either you back out and run third or both end up in the catch fence. I wouldn’t say it was the cleanest move in the world but he was happy with it and we still come away with a third place finish. It’s definitely nothing to hang your head about, we gave it 100% obviously but we just weren’t good enough to win the thing and the bottom line is we are here to win these races.” Win yes but at least the car is still straight and in one piece which makes it an easy week for the team in its preparation for this weekends Krikke Boys Shootout. Every part on the #47 Maxim will be checked and double-checked as they prepare for this race. The KBS is the premier event on the west coast Sprintcar calendar and Johnson would love nothing more than to create history and become the first American to win this coveted event and the $20,000 first place prize.
