Johnson Stunned At Success At Krikke Boys Shootout
Posted Wednesday, 3 March 2010 by BCM Motorsports Marketing
It was almost an hour after the main event when I finally talked with Jason Johnson and what was going through his mind about how he felt winning the Krikke Boys Shootout for 2010.

“Yea it was Awesome, outstanding, unreal – I really don’t know what words to use to describe it but this is what dreams are made of right here. To come away with this is an honor.” He said

To say he was pumped up at winning this event would be an understatement. As he arrived to be weighed in at the scales all you could hear was Johnson whoopin’ it up from under his helmet and punching the rock screen of his HM Racing #47 so hard that he loosened it from its mounts. He came out the car yelling for joy hugging wife Bobbi, car owner Alan Haynes and all the crew before doing the customary wing dance on top of the Haynes Labour Hire/Deans Auto Glass Maxim.

The weekend itself panned out brilliantly for the team as the Brendon Telfer prepared machine never missed a beat over the two nights, and Johnson did everything right out on the track by winning every race he started – including time trials. Two heat wins, two dash wins and two A-Main wins now that’s what I call a damn fine weekend.

For Johnson the big thirty five lap finale went to perfection “I actually wasn’t to concerned about losing the lead (to Sammy Swindell) I watched Swindell to see where he was running as I wasn’t to sure where to go in lapped traffic. I actually got in to a lapped car as I was probably a little too aggressive and Sammy got by me so once he got in front I kinda just paced myself and keeping pace with him. About the time Sammy got back into lapped traffic I pounced on him and just got lucky the same way he got lucky with me, he got a yellow when he passed me and my luck came my way because as soon as I got round him I got a yellow and a clear track.”

The only hiccup during the final was during the last red light stoppage as a front tyre started to deflate and the crew used a bit of ingenuity and plugged it with the best thing they could find – chewing gum. Johnson wasn’t sure about what would happen. “As a driver your in panic mode, you have a good weekend all weekend and you definitely don’t want to give it away because you got a tyre going down, but the guys handled the pressure well. Brendon handled the pressure as crew chief so well tonight he just walked up to me and said look mate stay calm keep your head on your shoulders we can still win this thing, don’t even worry about this right front, if it falls off just drive the wheels off it as the way your set up you don’t need it anyway so don’t let it affect your mind as you can win this thing.”

And he did.

This was a timely drive for a number of reasons as it was his last drive in Australia for Alan Haynes and it will give him the confidence needed when he gets home to the USA for his summer campaign in his own JJ Racing outfit. The significance of this race wasn’t lost on him either “Its such a special thing what the Krikkies have done for the boys, its really outstanding to a have a race in their honor and for everybody to support this deal is really amazing. I understand what they are going through, I’ve been through the same thing and you think times going to heal it but I tell you what it really doesn’t. When you have special events like this it makes it more memorable to win these.”

The last word goes to the proudest car owner in the pits in Haynes “First night out this summer we rolled and he beat himself up bad about it. We then had some wins and won Speedweek as well, but the wins weren’t coming our way even though Jason was driving fast we just couldn’t put a night together and kept starting to far back. This is the first time I’ve jumped out of the seat and let someone else drive my car and Lisa and I couldn’t be happier. He has changed a bit since we first met him he’s a bit more social nowadays and its been a pretty good year and cant wait to do it again next year. To win this race is special as I have raced against the Krikkies in the past and to win it with Jason who also lost a loved one in his sister way to early makes it so, so special.”

Yes it’s confirmed that the HM Racing outfit and Jason Johnson are to team up once again for the 2010/11 Australian season. After a debut season like they have had things can only look brighter and bigger for next year.
