Williamson wins round 11

CALLUM Williamson survived a night of drama to win round 11 of the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday night.

Williamson collected the win after the race was declared late in the event following contact between Jason Kendrick and Mitchell Wormall, who were fighting for the same piece of dirt and third spot, saw them both roll over for the second red light stop of the race.

Andrew Priolo claimed second while Ben Van Ryt, who was behind the crashing Wormall and Kendrick, took third after making contact while trying to avoid the crashing cars.

It was a good night for Williamson who had only arrived back in WA at lunch time after spending the week relaxing in Bali.

He won both his heat races and started on the front row with Priolo.

The feature race had not even started when Troy Lawson pulled infield in the #21 - ending a tough night that saw the car damaged in an earlier heat race.

Williamson got the jump on the first start with Kendrick sliding up to second but a full restart followed after Trevor Jolly pulled up on the back straight.

On the next start it was again Williamson, with Van Ryt looking strong early on and pulling off some spectacular slide jobs to try and gain positions, but again the field bunched up after AJ Nash came out of pits bend a bit too hot and clipped the front of Kris Coyle’s car.

Shaun Bradford and Ryan Lancaster were the innocent parties and both suffered damage.

Shortly after the next restart Van Ryt was locked into an entertaining battle with Wormall and Harding and by lap nine Williamson was entering lapped traffic and put Tom Callaghan a lap down.

With a third of the distance done it was Williamson from Priolo, Kendrick, Wormall and Harding.

Over the next handful of laps Priolo looked stronger in traffic and was closing the gap on Williamson.

On lap 16 he put a slide job on Williamson for the lead but it didn’t stick and then a few laps later the pair continued to trade positions.

Harding’s race came to a sudden stop when he crashed into the fence at the start of the main straight - his car was vertical and wedged into the fence, with officials firstly having to free up the car and then put in a new fence panel.

On the restart it was again Williamson from Priolo but the race only lasted a couple more laps before it was declared after the Wormall and Kendrick incident.

Contact between the two drivers continued on from the tension that brewed from an earlier heat race.

Jamie Oldfield, who was doing double duty and also contesting the Australian Late Model Championship, was fourth, ahead of Kris Coyle, Ryan Lancaster, Jaydee Dack and Tom Callaghan.

At the start of the night Shaun Bradford took the first heat race from Kendrick and Lancaster with Dack being a non-starter after having a fuel fire in the car in the hot laps immediately before the race.

Williamson won heat two from Nash and Priolo, with an incident between Wormall and Lawson marring the start of this race.

The third heat race was again Williamson’s after getting a good start and coming from P6, winning from Wormall and Coyle, while the final heat race went to Priolo from Van Ryt and Harding.
